Some Background Information

The “Events Out of Sequence” error is a consequence of the Rebalancing feature being implemented in Ce6.

Most commonly, this error will appear upon submission in dialogue list revision tasks, but it can occur in spotting lists and other scripting creation tasks. Essentially, the error is flagging a discrepancy between the sequence of the event in-times and the sequence of the A-title numbering in the Ce.

Unlike spotting tasks where dialogue and OST events are displayed in a single track inside Ce6, dialogue list tasks display these elements in different tracks. Before rebalancing can be attempted, the Ce will attempt to place both the dialogue and OST track in sequence based on their in-time so that it can accurately identify all events that need to be shifted if rebalancing has occurred.

Receiving the error

If out of sequence events are present in Ce6, the following error will appear upon submission, as well as in the Verification Report.

Note that you can open a report that lists all out of sequence events when the error appears on screen.

All affected events will be listed in the report along with a brief description of the issue.  
 In this case, the error says:

“Based on its start time, this Dialogue event should appear before OST event 236/783 which has a start time of 00:40:36:04.”

Please note: If the report is blank after receiving the error, please flag this to the Application Support team.

This description can often be quite confusing, so let’s break it down.

At first, it may seem that there is no error, if this is the case, please investigate before logging an Application Support ticket

Note that the description displays two numbers when displaying the error: 236/783. These are the event sequence number (236) and its corresponding A-Title number (783).

If you can only see the event sequence number, you will need to change your display settings by clicking: Settings > Display Preferences> Track Display > Display Event A-Title Numbers).

Now, let’s evaluate the error again.

“Based on its start time, this Dialogue event should appear before OST event 236/783 which has a start time of 00:40:36:04.”

Based on its A-title number (784) the event should appear after OST event 783. But per the in-times of these two events, it appears before the OST event in sequence. 

Remember, this is a dialogue list example, and since it has two Ce tracks (dialogue and OST) the event in-times are used to consider the sequence of events for rebalancing. For this reason, the Ce does not know how to proceed.

To ensure successful submission, the events will need to be in the correct sequence.  

 
Follow these steps to achieve this:

1. You will need to first re-time the event so that it is in sequence. In the screenshot above, event 560/784 would need to be retimed so that it appears after dialogue OST event 236/783.  
    
   In this case, the in-time of OST event 236/783 is 00:40:36:04. The in-time of event 560/784 will need to be changed so that it appears at least one frame after 00:40:36:04. 
    
   If the flagged out-of-sequence event has already been omitted, re-instate it so that this step can be completed. 
    
   Important: The in-time will also need to be in sequence with the next event. Check the in-time of the next event. In this example, it will be event with the A-Title number of 785. This is the event: 
    
    
    
   The in-time of event is 00:40:38:08, so the in-time of event 560/784 can be set to any time between 00:40:36:04 and 00:40:38:08. 
    
   We’ll choose 00:40:36:06.  
    
   Important: Even though the in-time is used to calculate the event sequence, the event must still follow the configuration rules. Be sure to update the event out time if it now violates any rules (for example, if the event out-time now is before the in-time).
2. Omit the event you just retimed, in this example 560/784.
   1. Manually re-add the event in its correct sequence. This will mean that the event will appear in a change list, but it cannot be avoided for now. 
       
      Note that the new event will not display an A-title number. The event will be assigned an A-title number once the Task has been submitted.
3. Run the Verification report again and repeat these steps for other “Out of Sequence” entries that appear in the report.
