Vertical Subtitle Requirements
Depending on the IMAX picture aspect ratio when compared to the non-IMAX picture aspect ratio (regular digital cinema), there will be different requirements for the vertical sub position. Below is the table that outlines them. Prior to a title beginning versioning, IMAX will let the studio or the vendor know what it requires.
| IMAX Aspect Ratio | Digital Cinema Aspect Ratio | IMAX Vertical Subtitle Positioning |
| Scope | Scope | Regular Digital Cinema Positioning |
| Flat | Flat |
10% bottom align inside the XML. QTs from IMAX should not be required since our picture aspect ratios match, but if you need them, please let us know. |
| IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio to 1.90 ONLY (Scope 2.39/Flat 1.90 or the movie is entirely all Flat 1.90 in IMAX only) | Scope |
1.90 flat picture: subs must be at 10% inside the XML. 2.39 scope picture: subs must be at 14% inside the XML. IMAX will send QTs since our picture aspect ratios are different. Vendors must ensure subtitles do not overlap against burned-in subtitles, locater cards, and important on-screen text/graphics. |
| IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio to 1.43 laser squeeze ONLY (Scope 2.39/IMAX 1.43 or all IMAX 1.43) | Scope or Flat |
1.43 picture: subs must be at 7% in a 1.90 container inside the XML. If the filmmaker or production wants to position the subs higher, they can, but they should not go below 7%. 2.39 scope picture: subs must be at 14% inside the XML. IMAX will send 1.90 QTs since our picture aspect ratios are different. Any picture in the 1.90 QT that expands to 1.90 should be considered 1.43 picture. Vendors must ensure subtitles do not overlap against burned-in subtitles, locater cards, and important on-screen text/graphics. |
